So here’s the story behind the cake that was supposed to be Queen Elsa
There are lots of opinions about a certain cake that’s flying around the Internet right now. Originally uploaded to reddit by user OfficialBigHead, the cake is supposed to be a model of Frozen‘s Queen Elsa, but it, uh, doesn’t exactly resemble the Disney princess. Unsurprisingly, most of the Internet’s thoughts about this creation are negative. And I’ll admit —this is not the most beautiful cake I’ve ever seen. It’s not even in the top 50 most beautiful cakes I’ve ever seen. But it’s a work of art in its own right, and it has the greatest story behind it —hear me out. But first, take a look:
Sure, it kind of looks like a contouring tutorial gone wrong. And the facial proportions are sort of imbalanced. But guys —there is so much to LOVE! The hair is really nice. Those snowflakes are ON POINT. And you have to admit —those eyebrows are major. Plus, it takes a lot of guts to create a 3-D Disney character out of cake flour and fondant.
As the cake’s story slowly unraveled, the company behind the original Elsa design,McGreevy Cakes, took to Facebook to make a great statement. McGreevey wrote on Facebook, “I think someone tried. I think someone had the guts to go for it… even when, I’m sure, they didn’t know if they could pull it off,” the company writes. “They took the chance anyway and put themselves out there.”
A couple hours later, the baker of the cake, Lisa Randolph-Gant, replied to McGreevy Cakes’ Facebook post, explaining that she made the Elsa cake for a non-profit called Icing Smiles that makes custom cakes for “families impacted by the critical illness of a child.” Randolph-Gant wrote,“The cake was made for Icing Smiles, for a really sick little girl, Randolph-Gant writes. “At the end of the day, I DIDN’T let that sick baby down. I gave it all I had to give.” Randolph-Gant goes on to say she’s fully aware it’s a “hot mess,” that she only had two hours to bake and deliver the cake, and that she battled bad weather and family emergencies along the way. All things considered, Randolph-Gant did a stellar job. Her perfect, heartwarming response has almost 2,000 likes, and McGreevey’s reply is giving us all the feels.
McGreevy concludes, “At the end of the day, they took a risk, and instead of hiding in their safe little comfy box, they stepped out of it for a second and gave it a go. And THAT’S what I think this life is all about.” PREACH, McGreevy Cakes!
Anyone who volunteers to bake fantastical cakes for sick children is a superstar in my book. Also, if I was baking an Elsa cake, I would be lucky if mine looked remotely that good. Let it go, guys! (#SorryNotSorry)
