She was just named the editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and previously worked as the editorial director of the books department at The New York Times. Jones is also an alum of Time Magazine and The Paris Review. And, she’s a graduate of Harvard and holds a doctorate in English and comparative literature from Columbia. Phew. In the last few days, though, Jones has made headlines not for her incredible accomplishments, but for her fashion choices. An article published by WWD on Friday, November 17th, reports that during an introductory meeting at Condé Nast, a member of the Vanity Fair fashion staff criticized Jones’s personal style. Specifically, her fox tights.

The thing is, Radhika Jones can wear whatever she wants. Besides, foxes are one of the coolest animals, and wearing any article of clothing adorned with them is really a great power move. It still shouldn’t matter what Jones wore though, fox tights or no fox tights. She has an incredible resume and a lot to offer in her new position. Focusing on what she wore instead of her accomplishments is superficial.

Of course, this treatment is nothing new for women. But it’s disappointing nonetheless. What women wear at work — or anywhere, really — shouldn’t be a basis for judgment as to how well someone will perform. Also, fox tights are adorable.
