We tried Starbucks’ new Smoked Butterscotch and Citrus Green Tea lattes so you don’t have to
Starbucks just rolled out two new drinks: Smoked Butterscotch and Citrus Green Tea lattes, which you can get cold or iced (we chose iced because it’s essentially been furnace weather in LA). These two dranks are especially exciting because they were created at the Starbucks Roastery, Starbucks’ tasting room based in their Seattle motherland —and it’s the first time ever that everyone, nationwide, gets to try drinks coming from the Roastery.
So, did the two beverages live up to our expectations? HelloGiggles staff decided to find out.
First up? The Butterscotch Latte.
“This drink had a full centimeter of caramel stuck to the bottom of it, so getting globs of that with the coffee was absolutely heavenly. I’m not sure this tastes that different than a caramel macchiato, but I would totally order it for a Monday (or Tuesday or Wednesday) pick-me-up” -Christina, Video
“I would bathe in this. Is that too weird? It kinda tastes like the toffee nut syrup (which I will frequently order) mixed with caramel, and I want to drink it all forever. I feel like it should have whipped cream, but it doesn’t, but it COULD. It is deserving of a whipped topping” -Rachel, Staff Writer
“This tastes almost exactly like a melted Caramel Frappuccino. Which like, is not a bad thing. It’s really sweet, so expect a sugar + caffeine high after downing one of these suckers” -Gina, Editor
“Wow, that’s not as bad as I thought it’d be. It’s very, very rich. It’s more like candy than a drink. Which, ya know, is great if you prefer candy to coffee” -Leonora, Executive Editor
And then we tried the Citrus Green Tea Latte.
“…Ehhhhhhhhh. I wish I could clearly express my facial expression via words when I first drank it. it was like green tea, but then it was citrus, and it was so watery and like, not what I was expecting at all. I was not a fan (I’m so sorry, Starbucks). I LOVE green tea, and I was a little let down” -Rachel, Staff Writer
“It’s supposed to be green tea/citrus? I don’t taste the citrus, which makes me glad because there’s milk in here. Citrus + milk? I don’t think so. It’s definitely really, really sweet. Maybe I detect hints of cucumber?” -Leonora, Executive Editor
“The Citrus Green Tea Latte seemed like it was going to be great, until it definitely 100% wasn’t. It tasted fine at first, but then had a weird cucumber-y after taste that didn’t mix well with the lemon-y citrus flavor” -Kayleigh, Editor
“I didn’t think this one was SO bad! Like, there is definitely room for improvement, and it kind of tastes powdery and like someone threw some herbs in there. Green tea and citrus and milk? Not the worst combination, but certainly not a winner of flavors” -Gina, Editor
Final verdict?
We all agreed these new additions didn’t excite us. The Butterscotch latte was tasty, but basically unremarkable. The Citrus Green latte was, hands down, a confusing disappointment.
Try them out (or not) —they’re available until March 21.
