These businesses are offering 20% off in honor of Equal Pay Day
Today, April 4th, businesses across the country are partnering with LeanIn.org to spread awareness of the 20% gender pay gap. Currently on average, women are paid 20% less than their male counterparts in the workplace. So, to raise awareness and show support for Equal Pay Day, several businesses are offering 20% off their products and services.
Lean In, spearheaded by Facebook’s chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, has partnered with hundreds of businesses to participate in the Lean In #20PercentCounts one-day campaign. The goal is to highlight the negative impact of 20% less income, thus proving that the economy would improve if the gender pay gap was closed.
In fact, according to Lean In's pay gap statistics, "the U.S. workforce would add $513 billion in new income every year."
LeanIn.org features a drop-down menu and map where you can find local businesses near you participating in today’s event. Or, check out the larger companies below that aim to bring forth awareness and make a difference.
LUNA
Between April 3rd through April 11th, LUNA is offering 20% off all LUNA Bars sold via Lunabar.com. The company then plans on matching the discount amount with a donation of up to $100,000 to fund free salary negotiation workshops in support of #20PercentCounts.
Lyft
By using Lyft’s services today between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., 20% of your ride will be donated equally to Feeding America, Boys & Girls Club, Dress for Success®, and AAUW. Lyft will donate up to $100,000, split equally between these four organizations and the company is planning to reach that limit early in the day. So if you want to donate through Lyft, call your ride early!
Note: No Lyft 20% donations will be taken from the following states — Alabama, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and South Carolina.
P&G
As the parent company of Secret, Always, Pantene, and Gillette, P&G is offering a 20% rebate on their products through their prepaid card. The rebate value is $10 and can be applied to products purchased between April 2nd to April 30th, 2017.
Today is a day to support closing the gender pay gap for all women. But please keep in mind that the pay gap isn’t equal amongst all women. Black women are paid 37% less and Hispanic women are paid 46% less than their male counterparts. July 31st marks black women’s Equal Pay Day and November 2nd marks Hispanic women’s Equal Pay Day.
2017 can be the year to make huge strides towards closing the pay gap for all women. So let’s work together and make it happen.
