A guy named Burger and a girl named King just got their wedding paid for by Burger King
Life-long sweethearts Joel Burger and Ashley King knew their love was destined for greatness. This epic combination of last names was brought to light by their school’s visiting motivational speaker in kindergarten. Burger tells The State Journal Register,” After the man was finished with his motivational speech, he asked the two fifth-grade (student council) representatives to stand up as he wanted the students to applaud our efforts in helping set up his event. As soon as he said, ‘Joel Burger and Ashley King,’ he started to laugh out loud and pronounced we were ‘Burger King’.” Joel and Ashley knew right then and there that they were meant for each other. Can we get an “AWWWW”?
Even though they were (playfully) teased about their last names, the two decided to go roll with it. “We have yet to escape the teasing, but we have fully embraced our nickname,” Joel Burger told the Register. Although Joel didn’t ask Ashley out until their freshman year in college, the two were super close friends, attending prom and homecoming dances together. You can’t really escape fate though, can you? Probs not.
Burger and King announced their engagement by taking a photo with a Burger King sign, and the photo made its way to the local newspaper. Their story appeared on the Register, catching Burger King’s eye (and heart) —BK tweeted the article and asked their followers to help them find Burger and King.
Ashley responded, and BK tweeted, “If it isn’t Mrs Burger-King to be. Send us a DM, we have something special for you.” Little did the couple know that “something special” was AN ENTIRE WEDDING. “Burger King wants to help give you a whopper of a wedding. In other words, it’s on us,” a Burger King rep told Ashley and Joel.
“When we heard about the happy Burger-King couple, we felt an overwhelming urge to celebrate their upcoming marriage. On so many levels, it felt like fate. They found each other and their story found us,” Eric Hirschhorn, a Burger King spokesman announced.
This awesome couple will be getting married July 17th in Jacksonville, Illinois, and their guests will be able to save the date with Burger King koozies, which is infinitely perfect. We wish Ashley and Joel the very best!
On another note —if there’s anyone out there with the last names of “Mick” and “Donald,” now is probably the time to speak up!
