The Budweiser 2018 Super Bowl commercial is here, and it’ll make you ugly cry

Aside from the Super Bowl’s football game itself, we can’t wait to see the commercials too. The 2018 Super Bowl is on Sunday, February 4th. But the Budweiser 2018 Super Bowl commercial is already here, and it’ll make you ugly cry. The beer company shared the ad on YouTube on Friday, January 26th. As of this writing, it already has more than 1.7 million views.

We’re suckers for heartwrenching commercials. Back at Christmastime, holiday commercials made us cry, like the famous John Lewis Christmas ad about the boy befriending the monster under his bed. There was also BBC One’s father/daughter Christmas commercial that Twitter went crazy over. And when it comes to the Super Bowl, we can always count on Budweiser’s commercials to make us emotional. Anyone else still thinking about the “Lost Dog” Super Bowl that ad Budweiser made back in 2015?

This year, the Budweiser 2018 Super Bowl commercial will tear at your heartstrings, but in a slightly different way. It acknowledges the many natural disasters that have happened around the U.S. in recent months, like devastating hurricanes the California wildfires. When disaster strikes, access to clean drinking water is a big necessity. And Budweiser’s commercial recognizes the very real work that the company does to deliver clean drinking water to communities in need.

Budweiser has donated 79 million cans of water to disaster relief efforts over the past 30 years, Adweek reports. And just last year, in 2017, the beer company donated three million cans of water to disaster relief for people in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and California.

"This year we wanted to use our Super Bowl time not only to entertain but also to bring a message that is really [about] purpose and to celebrate, of course, our incredible employees," Ricardo Marques, VP of marketing for Budweiser, told Adweek. "The people that you see in the spot are working for the company."

Yep — Kevin Fahrenkrog, the man in the commercial, really is the general manager of the Budweiser brewery in Cartersville, Georgia.

Altogether, 23 real Budweiser employees are featured in the ad. It’s a small touch that makes the message even that much more powerful. Speaking of powerful, the commercial is set to Skylar Grey’s cover of the song “Stand By Me.” Downloading the song is a quick and easy way to support relief efforts, as a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Red Cross.

Cheers to the Budweiser 2018 Super Bowl commercial.
