Brittany Holloway-Brown is our Illustrator of the Week!

From her gorgeous portraits to her flawless hand-lettering, Brooklyn-based illustrator and artist Brittany Holloway-Brown knows how to make covetable art. The One Kings Lane lead production designer and 2011 MICA graduate is obsessed with aesthetics, and it completely shows in her work (which is why we’ve been fangirling out about her watercolors for years). Brittany’s style is classic, beautiful, and guaranteed to make you feel just a little more fabulous for having it in your life, which is precisely why she’s our Illustrator of the Week!

No pressure, but describe your art: I like drawing simple shapes, lines, and fields of color, and seeing what evolves from there. My process is very organic and reliant on feelings. I have to get the right amount of push and pull, detail and simplicity. I would call my work bold and intuitive.

What inspires you to make things: I’m inspired by a wide range of things; my style is largely impressionistic so I am drawn to “sensual” themes—love, loss, memory, interpersonal relationships, etc. A lot of things inspire me even if they don’t directly inform my work, as well—non-Western belief systems, rituals, the grotesque. Also, just seeing the work that other people are putting out into the world is amazing. I went to school with a lot of amazing artists.

Your favorite thing(s) to draw: Things that I know—girls, makeup, fashion, food. At one time, I tried really hard to keep my work from being all “fluff,” but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to draw pretty things!

Medium of choice: Watercolor, ink and pencil.

The first time you knew you wanted to be an artist: Sometime in high school, I think. I had started drawing in middle school but I only became serious about it when I had encouragement from my art teacher, my friends, and my family. I took a couple extracurricular classes to supplement, some in my hometown and some in Philadelphia at University of the Arts. My poor mom had to drive me there every Saturday, but I am so grateful she did.

Proudest achievement so far: The overwhelming response and support I’ve gotten for my “Dark Girls” series. It was just something I started because I wanted to draw girls in makeup, but women have reached out to tell me that they recreate the looks in their everyday life and are uplifted by it. That’s so important to me!

Music you listen to while you work: Lots of throwback music, surprisingly. Lots of disco and soul. Also, I have a special place in my heart for Edith Piaf.

Your most prized possession: My jewelry collection; I have a lot of hand-me-downs from the women in my family. It’s comforting to know that the pieces lived with them as they formed their identities and now these pieces get to live with me as I travel through my day-to-day.

Your personal hero: I honestly have too many to list, but let’s put Beyoncé and my mom at the top of that.

The last thing to make you giggle: This gif of Drake having no rhythm.

Current project(s): I want to get back into collaging! I have a huge stash of papers that I think would be a great addition to the textures of my pieces.
