Britney Spears doesn’t remember her first VMA performance, and she’s actually all of us

For a lot of us, Britney Spears’ first VMA performance was something of a pop culture legend. While it was way back in 1999, we think it’s safe to say that most of us still remember her purple, two-piece outfit (which included, of course, the most ’90s staple of all time: a crop-top), loads of bedazzlement, and sneakers. Oh, and she performed with *NSYNC. Just look:

Who could forget this iconic performance?

Somehow, Britney herself. In an interview with lvis Duran and the Z Morning Zoo, she said, “I think I was with *NSYNC when I performed for the first time. I think the whole setup was a classroom, and my four main dancers were in the front at their desk and I came out of my locker. But, you know what, I don’t remember at all. I have no recollection. I couldn’t tell you anything about it.”

While it might sound crazy to think that someone wouldn’t remember their first VMA performance (since that would be like, the highlight of our entire lives), we have to remind ourselves that Britney has performed countless times in her lifetime, and well, it makes sense that those performances would start to blur together (do you remember every single day at the office? We know, we don’t).

At the end of the day, this is a strangely relatable moment with Brit Brit, and it’s kind of nice that she’s being so honest about not really remembering. She basically sounds like any one of us when asked about something that happened 17-years-ago.

Oh, and you better believe we’re about to track that performance down and watch it on repeat. Because what are Tuesdays for?!
