What Brings Out The Fiery Feminist In Our Own Zooey D.
We talk a lot on HelloGiggles about how awesome our co-founder Zooey Deschanel is but that’s only because she keeps doing ALL THE AWESOME THINGS. The awesomeness, it must be reported.
Case in point, in a world where tons of female celebrities are distancing themselves from the word “feminism” (which just means “I am a person who believes that all people should be treated equally”), Zooey proudly claims the word. Zooey appears on the cover of this month’s In Style magazine, and in the interview, she sounds off on the backwards standards the media has set for women in the limelight.
“Like every woman is dying to give birth! I don’t think so. Nobody asks guys that. And you go into a supermarket and every tabloid is like, ‘Pregnant and Alone!’ Stuck in the 1950s ideal of how a woman should live her life. This brings out the fiery feminist in me.”
She’s absolutely right, the media is constantly pressuring female celebrities to perform a high wire act with their personal lives. If a woman does not adhere to their strict standards (marriage, then children, that order), the press declares a field day on said woman. Zooey pushing back against these expectations exemplifies the best kind of ballsiness.
She actually has a history of speaking up on these issues. Last year, when asked if she wanted to have children, she super-smartly picked apart the question:
“That is so personal, and it’s my pet peeve when people press you on it. And it’s always women who get asked! Is anybody saying that to George Clooney?”
She’s right. No one is saying that to George Clooney. In fact, when Clooney got engaged to THE WIKILEAKS LAWYER the press mostly focused on his fiancee´ “landing an eligible bachelor” and wearing cool shoes.
Sometimes, the media has a narrow view of women and if this backwardness receives no pushback, things will just keep on being backwards. A million props to Zooey for speaking her mind and owning her fiery feminism. Girl, you’re a queen.
