The brilliant reason Beyoncé is selling “Boycott Beyonce” t-shirts

Last night marked the official start of Beyoncé’s Formation World Tour, which will see the Lemonade singer hit 41 cities globally. And though fans were expecting Queen Bey to bring it (and she most certainly did), they were even more surprised by what was available at the merch table.

According to attendees at her first concert, at Miami’s Marlins Park, fans were invited to purchase t-shirts reading “Boycott Beyoncé” and the reasoning behind the t-shirts could not be more genius.

As MTV News points out, when Beyoncé’s “Formation” was released in February, some critics said the accompanying video — with its Black Lives Matter message and an image of Beyoncé lying on a sinking police car — was encouraging violence against police. Accordingly, Miami’s own Fraternal Order of Police announced their plans to boycott Beyoncé’s concert in the city in protest. Well, what better way to tell your haters, “Boy, bye,” than to give them the very weapon they seek: An amazing t-shirt reading “Boycott Beyoncé.”

For the record, Beyoncé is not anti-police. In a rare interview with Elle magazine, the 34-year-old pop star says she completely supports the police —until they abuse their authority.

“Anyone who perceives my message as anti-police is completely mistaken,” she told Elle. “I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of officers who sacrifice themselves to keep us safe. But let’s be clear: I am against police brutality and injustice. Those are two separate things.”

Exactly. And for anyone who doesn’t get it by now? Boy bye.
