Kristen Wiig and her Bridesmaids co-creator are writing a new comedy, and the plot sounds epic
IOHO, Bridesmaids remains one of the funniest movies about female friendship ever. The 2011 comedy gave us so many quotable moments and launched the careers of a few of our favorite funny ladies (Melissa McCarthy and Ellie Kemper, anyone?). And we wouldn’t have had any of it without the genius writing of Kristen Wiig and her writing partner Annie Mumolo. Which is why we’re beyond stoked to announce that Wiig and Mumolo are teaming up for a new movie—and it looks hilarious.
Titled Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, their latest project follows two longtime friends on their first-ever vacation away from the Midwest. But things don’t go according to plan, and during their trip they become involved with someone plotting to kill all of the town’s residents. The movie will feature Wiig as Barb and Mumolo as Star in addition to their writing credit. Deadline reports that it’s their first project together since Bridesmaids.
THR notes that Gloria Sanchez Productions, a female-focused company led by Jessica Ebaum, Adam McKay, and Will Ferrell, will be producing Wiig and Mumolo’s new venture. Josh Greenbaum, who has directed episodes of series like Fresh Off the Boat and New Girl, will direct.
"I'm so excited to be a part of this movie which showcases Kristen and Annie’s original, fresh, and undeniably hilarious voice in spades," Greenbaum told THR, adding, "I’m also always looking for projects with titles that rhyme, so it really all worked out on this one."
Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar is set to hit theaters in 2020, and we’re basically already in line.
