Why this bride’s selfie wedding photos went viral
Last month, when Liisa Luts married her fiancé, Henno Luts, she made a rather unconventional choice. Instead of hiring a traditional wedding photographer, Liisa decided to document the special day herself. Armed with only a digital camera, she snapped photos of her wedding day, from the moment she woke up until she went to bed that night wrapped in her new husband’s arms. Clearly she made the right choice, because the results are unbelievably simple, poignant and beautiful.
It probably comes as no surprise to learn that Liisa is a professional photographer. She and her husband run a visual arts company called Mellow in Estonia, where they live. But her choice to take her own wedding photos was actually an attempt to avoid a look of slick professionalism. As she told PetaPixel, “With all respect to the wedding photographers, I just wanted something more ‘us’ and therefore more authentic. . . And what could be more real than me taking the photos myself on the way as the day goes?”
The images she captured couldn’t be more authentic. It’s no wonder they’ve gone totally viral since she posted them online. The pictures really give us a feel for what she and Henno are like as a couple. (Amazing. Seriously, we want to hang out with them in the worst way.) The photos are also fascinating, because they give us a glimpse into the mind and heart of the bride on her wedding day. We see the event in the same way she does.
She told Cosmopolitan, “I just snapped photos every now and then and didn’t plan or stage anything and captured [moments] as honestly and straightforwardly as possible. It’s just a day and we have a lot of married days ahead of us. That’s also why I didn’t worry about capturing ‘the most important moments’ or ‘missing something.’” We don’t think you missed anything, Liisa. In fact, it all looks rather stunningly romantic.
And in case you’re wondering, they took the camera along on their honeymoon to Nice.
