Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie came out as pansexual, and we’re so proud of him

For the past decade, Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie has captured the hearts of fans with his glam-goth look and impressive vocal range. And now, Urie has opened up about his sexuality in a new interview with Paper magazine, officially coming out as pansexual.

In the interview, published July 6th, Urie discussed the origins of his music career and got candid about his early sexual experiences. The singer and former Broadway star also said that, although he is married to a woman, he’s attracted to other genders.

"Yeah I guess you could qualify me as pansexual because I really don't care," he told the magazine. "If a person is great, then a person is great. I just like good people, if your heart's in the right place. I'm definitely attracted to men. It's just people that I am attracted to."

The interviewer clarified, “So you’re pansexual.”

“I guess so. I guess this is me coming out as pansexual,” Urie responded.

Urie also talked about his past use of the term “barsexual” to refer to the fact that he was more open to sexual experimentation after drinking. He admitted to Paper that this view was problematic:

"People get offended by that," he acknowledged. "I've said things without thinking about it — not trying to be offensive. I need to apologize for that."

Even before Urie’s official coming out, the singer and his music served as an inspiration to many queer fans. According to HuffPost, in June he donated $1 million to the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network through the band’s charity, the Highest Hopes Foundation. There’s even an Instagram account, “thankyoubrendon,” that contains messages from fans praising the singer for helping them come to terms with their identities. The singer previously identified as straight, but in past interviews, he admitted that he was attracted to men.

Panic! at the Disco fans flocked to Twitter to show their support for Urie.

We’re so glad Urie is proudly embracing his sexuality, and we have a feeling he’ll inspire so many others to do the same.
