Brenda Chi is our Illustrator of the Week!

One look at Brenda Chi’s work, and you can immediately tell she’s the coolest. The LA-based illustrator is all kinds of talented; and no matter her subject matter, she totally nails it. Brenda is an Illustration Grad from the Art Center College of Design — which is very impressive, FYI — but she’s got a style all her own. Her work is sassy, fun, and elegant; and we’re totally in love with the women she brings to life. Her use of color palettes is absolutely gorgeous, and we can’t get enough of her work — which is why she’s our Illustrator of the Week!

No pressure, but describe your art:  I think my art is a little snarky, funny, a little retro and bold.

What inspires you to make things: I’m a fan of pop culture and comedy, so in my art, I’m always trying to reproduce my version of what I admire.

Your favorite thing(s) to draw: Glamazons. Usually women with an attitude because I was always tired of seeing pretty drawings of ladies that had no entertaining character. I like drawings that have a little twinkle in their eyes.

Medium of choice: FW Acrylic Ink and Faber-Castell polychromo pencils.

The first time you knew you wanted to be an artist: When I was a kid, I was the one who was always drawing in the classroom. Even if I didn’t consider myself an artist, people called me that all the time. I guess it stuck.

Proudest achievement so far: Graduating Art Center College of Design. Right now, my career has just started so I’m looking forward to the accomplishments and change in the future.

Music you listen to while you work: The Internet (that’s really a band), RuPaul, Amy Winehouse at the moment. Usually whatever is on my Spotify playlist that I’ve collected. Alternative RnB on spotify is a great playlist.

Your most prized possession: My left hand and my eyes. They help me create worlds with art.

Your personal hero: My mother and father.

The last thing to make you giggle: I saw a picture of Martha Stewart and Busta Rhymes posed together. I think it’s from an old VMAs.

Current project(s): Currently freelancing with IQ Magic to create informative illustrations for a children’s health exhibit in Mexico City. Personally working on a 1940s Chinatown street scene, with restaurants, signs, and menus.
