Boxing icon Muhammad Ali has passed away at 74

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali passed away at the age of 74 yesterday after being treated for respiratory complications. Ali had been hospitalized since earlier in the week but was listed in “fair condition” and expected to be released from the hospital after only a “brief” stay. Sadly, that was not the case.

Ali’s family confirmed his death on social media and released a statement, saying:

As a boxer, the three-time heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medal winner was known for his brash confidence and colorful personality. But he also made headlines as an advocate for civil rights and was a beloved humanitarian. During the Vietnam War, Ali was a conscientious objector and refused to be drafted. He backed up this conviction by  giving up his boxing title during the prime of his career. His title was eventually reinstated, and he went on to box until he retired just shy of his 40th birthday, with a record of 56 wins and 5 losses, with 37 knockouts.
