Everything to know about Lena Waithe’s new TV show, Boomerang
Lena Waithe’s career has ascended to new heights in recent years. She made history by becoming the first black woman to win an Emmy for comedy writing, and she then went on to break barriers by appearing on the cover of Vanity Fair. Now, Waithe has another exciting project in the works—her upcoming BET series Boomerang.
As Entertainment Weekly reports, the new television show is a spinoff of the 1992 romantic comedy of the same name, which starred Eddie Murphy, Halle Berry, and Robin Givens. The 10-episode series will be set in present-day Atlanta, following the main characters’ 26-year-old children as they try to navigate dating and their careers in advertising. Berry is also executive-producing the show along with Waithe.
"It's a new take on Boomerang—something fresh for a new generation," Waithe said in a video on the making of the series.
Waithe tapped Insecure writer Ben Cory Jones to be the series’ showrunner, noting that BET and Paramount “really trusted” her recommendation. In the first look at the series, Jones noted that the show hopes to explore “what it takes to genuinely connect with someone in this sort of age of non-connectivity.”

According to Deadline, Tequan Richmond will play Jacqueline Boyer’s son, Bryson, while Tetona Jackson will portray Angela and Marcus Graham’s daughter, Simone. The show also stars Leland Martin and Lala Milan. Speaking to EW, Waithe explained that she hopes the show will take the audience on “a beautiful ride about what it means to be young, gifted, and black—and exhausted from always trying to be perfect all the time.”
"And we all have trauma from our parents that we can’t shake," she added. "That is our journey: to shake our trauma into fine art."
Boomerang premieres February 12th at 10 p.m. ET on BET. We can’t wait to watch.
