Books coming out this week: Well-Read Black Girl, I Might Regret This, and more

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: My reading tastes change with the seasons. When the temperature drops, my TBR pile shifts along with it. And right now, I’m seeking darker family dramas and brutally honest, vulnerable nonfiction. I woke up today and thought to myself, I need to read some deep thoughts and honest truths, and I need to read them now. Fortunately, the publishing world seems to feel the same way, because those are exactly the types of books coming out this week.

I’m confident that every title on this list will make you think and reflect deeply in one way or another. Whether it’s about death, loss, heartbreak, or representation, if you favor more serious reads, the books coming out this week will deliver. And if you don’t, there are a few lighthearted titles in the mix, too. But even those will make you think—because books can be both fluffy and smart. What a week, what a world, and what a time to be alive.

Here are six books coming out this week that you don’t want to miss.

Well-Read Black Girl began as an Instagram account in 2015 dedicated to how important it is for everyone to recognize themselves in literature. It’s since grown into an online community, a book club, and now, a collection of essays. Well-Read Black Girl is an inspiring and necessary collection by black female writers including Jesmyn Ward, Morgan Jerkins, Tayari Jones, and more.

2Family Trust by Kathy Wang, out October 30th

When Stanley Huang is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, his family must face the reality that his time is limited. From his children to his first wife and his second wife, everybody processes the news differently. Despite his claims that he’s rich, nobody knows how much Stanley is actually worth or who gets what after he dies. Think Crazy Rich Asians, but moodier and more serious with even more family drama.

3I Might Regret This: Essays, Drawings, Vulnerabilities, and Other Stuff by Abbi Jacobson, out October 30th

In July 2017, after wrapping Season 4 of Broad City, Abbi Jacobson could have felt on top of the world. But all she felt was drained after working long days and getting her heart broken. She needed something to focus on to distract her from the pain, but she also needed to carve out time to sit with it, think about it, and process it. So she embarked on a cross-country road trip from New York to Los Angeles. And when she got back, she wrote a smart, vulnerable book about it.

4The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory, out October 30th

We’ve all seen cringeworthy viral videos of wedding proposals gone wrong. If you’ve ever wondered what happens after the camera awkwardly cuts, read The Proposal. This sweet, charming novel is just as fun (and feminist) as Jasmine Guillory’s The Wedding Date.
