Blue Ivy Carter Just Won Her First BET Award at 8 Years Old

Update, June 29th, 2020, 9:24 a.m.: At only 8 years old, Blue Ivy Carter just became the youngest BET Award winner in history with her first-ever win. She took home the trophy for the BET HER Award for  “Brown Skin Girl,” alongside her famous mama Beyoncé, as well as WizKid and SAINt Jhn. Blue Ivy isn’t even 10, and she’s already absolutely slaying the music scene.

“Brown Skin Girl” is from The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack and it celebrates dark brown-skinned girls and women.

Congratulations to Blue Ivy, and we’re sure if music is what she wants to do, this is only one of many awards to come.

Original post, June 16th, 2020: Well, that didn’t take long. Blue Ivy Carter, daughter of iconic duo Beyoncé and Jay-Z, just received her first BET Award nomination. The nominations were announced Monday, June 15th, and Blue made the list for her feature on her mother’s track “Brown Skin Girl,” a song from The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack. The song, which also features WizKid and SAINt JHNN, is nominated for the BET Her Award.

Although this recent nomination is a great honor, Blue and “Brown Skin Girl” have already taken home awards in the past year. The track won the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award at the 2019 BET Soul Train Awards and the Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration award at the 2020 NAACP Image Awards.

So, if “Brown Skin Girl” wins in its category at the BET Awards on June 28th, Blue Ivy will be a three-time award-winning musical artist.  She’s still only 8 years old, by the way.

Blue, WhizKid, SAINt JHN, and Beyoncé have some stiff competition in the Her Award category. They’re against Alicia Keys’s “Underdog”; Ciara’s “Melanin” featuring Lupita Nyong’o; Ester Dean, City Girls and LaLa, and Layton Greene’s “I Choose”; Lizzo and Missy Elliot’s “Tempo”; and Rapsody’s “Afeni” featuring PJ Morton.

As for Blue Ivy’s mom, Beyoncé, she is nominated in the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist category, a category in which she’s won 10 times already. Bey’s Netflix film Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé is also up for Best Movie.

Halle x Chloe, the girl group Beyoncé has mentored for several years, is up for the BET Best Group award. Needless to say, the Knowles-Carter influence is strong at the BET Awards this year—as is true every year, TBH.

The 2020 BET Awards will be held virtually this year, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Tune in to the show on June 28th at 8 p.m. ET on CBS to see if Blue Ivy takes home her first-ever BET trophy.
