Black Widow is FINALLY getting her own movie (we think)
Since she burst onto the scene in Iron Man 2, Natasha Romanoff — aka Black Widow — has been capturing the hearts and minds of people in and out of the Marvel Universe (not to mention literally capturing whatever bad guys may cross her path). She’s an Avenger, the right hand of S.H.I.E.L.D., buddies with Captain America, and all around badass.
Yet, despite the fact that she’s a welcome and fascinating character in so many of the Marvel movies, she has yet to have her own stand-alone film (let alone a full franchise like many of her male counterparts). Every once in a while we get little flashbacks into her backstory within other Marvel movies, but it’s only enough to add to our curiosity about her rather than satisfy it. But that is all (maybe) going to change.
During a Q&A interview with Deadline for the latest Marvel blockbuster hit, Captain America: Civil War, studio director Kevin Feige admitted some pretty exciting information. Despite the fact that the studio already has a slate of movies planned out until 2019 which do not currently include a Black Widow movie, he said that they are actually really interested (and supposedly “committed”) to giving her some stand alone love. He even added, “We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand-alone franchise”
Um, we totally agree. That’s basically what we’ve been saying all along.
For now, Marvel Studios’s sentiments are definitely nice to hear, but still feel very noncommittal. Until they actually confirm the upcoming Black Widow movie, we’ll have to just keep waiting and watching the SNL’s spoof movie trailer on repeat.
