Here are the 5 records “Black Panther” broke in its *second* weekend of release

Black Panther broke countless records during its astounding first weekend, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down, breaking even more records at the box office during its second weekend in theaters. During its opening weekend, Black Panther grossed a resounding $218 million domestically, making the film the fifth-biggest opening weekend of all time.

But in its second weekend, the latest installment in Marvel’s vast cinematic universe continued a stellar domestic run at the box office, bringing in a resounding $108 million and the total domestic gross to $400 million. Meanwhile, Black Panther has already crossed the $700 million mark worldwide.

The film follows T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) as he returns to Wakanda following the events of Captain America: Civil War to be crowned king but faces an unexpected threat when arms dealer and enemy to Wakanda Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) teams up with Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), who challenges T’Challa for the throne.

After its groundbreaking opening weekend, co-writer and director Ryan Coogler wrote a moving letter to fans.

While the film seamlessly fits into the MCU timeline — even tossing in a special easter egg for Marvel superfans during the end credits — the film is also rightfully being lauded as a stellar standalone film, making it the perfect film for MCU fans and newcomers alike. The overwhelmingly positive reviews of the film have also made it the best reviewed superhero film of all time, with a 97 % on Rotten Tomatoes. As the film continues its reign at the box office, here are all the records Black Panther broke during its second weekend:

1It had the second-best second weekend of all time:

Bringing in $108 million during its second weekend, Black Panther soared past The Avengers to have the second-biggest second weekend of all time. The film now sits behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made a little over $149 million during its second weekend back in 2015.

2It has the third-fastest domestic gross of all time:

Having officially crossed the $400 million mark at the domestic box office in just 10 days, Black Panther only sits behind two films that’ve made more money in a ridiculously short amount of time. Tied with Jurassic World for crossing the $400 million mark in 10 days, the 2015 film grossed $402 million, while Star Wars: The Force Awakens holds the record with $540 million. According to Forbes, Black Panther‘s ranking falls a little bit if adjusted for inflation, it would still be the fifth-fastest domestic gross. Simply put, Black Panther is making a *lot* of money, quickly.

3It had the smallest decline of any of MCU’s 18 released films:

While even the biggest films in the world lose steam between opening weekend and weekend two, Black Panther only saw a 46% decline, making it the smallest decline of any other MCU film, in front of Thor, which saw a 47% decline and Iron Man, which had a 48% decline.

4It’s the fifth-highest grossing MCU film — for now:

Black Panther‘s second weekend saw the film surpass Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 to become the fifth highest grossing MCU film. The film currently sits behind Captain America: Civil WarIron Man 3Avengers: Age of Ultron, and The Avengers. But in just a few days, Black Panther will likely move up in the rankings, catching up to Civil War, which has a total domestic gross of $408 millionand Iron Man 3, which grossed $409 million. A stellar third weekend could even see it top Age of Ultron‘s $459 million to become the second-highest grossing MCU film of all time.

5It’s the ninth-highest grossing superhero film of all time:

Crossing the $400 million mark, Black Panther now sits at number nine on the list of highest grossing superhero films of all time, behind Spider-ManCaptain America: Civil WarIron Man 3Wonder WomanThe Dark Knight Rises, Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Dark Knight, and The Avengers. However, in just one week all of that could change, as Black Panther is easily on its way to becoming the fifth-highest grossing superhero film of all time within the next week and could even find its way further up the list, depending on its third weekend returns.

We can’t wait to see how many records Black Panther makes during its third weekend!
