“Black Mirror” might do an entire spinoff *series* about “USS Callister”
If you’re one of the many fans who quickly devoured all the episodes of Black Mirror Season 4 and is now clamoring for more, hear this: “USS Callister” might be getting its own spinoff series.
*cue* squeals of excitement
While all Black Mirror episodes are mind-blowingly riveting and thought-provoking, “USS Callister” was a definite standout. It paid homage to Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica, as it was centered around a swanky spaceship traversing across the galaxy, fighting off forces of evil and keeping the entire universe in a constant state of peace.
It was more than that, of course. The episode chronicled a group of digital clones who are under the control of their sinister boss with an apparent nice guy syndrome. It ended on a cliffhanger, with the entire crew managing to escape, and is now freely exploring the uncharted territories of space. It surely had an uplifting ending compared to the otherwise tragic episodes of the series, and, according to “USS Callister” star Jimmi Simpson, it was a story that he would love to continue working on — because the sequel and spin-off machine is already churning.
“I’ve heard little buzzes [about more]. I’ve heard little buzzes. But I don’t believe anything until I’m working on set,” the actor said in an interview with TVLine. “I would love it.”
Oh, we would certainly love it, too!
Toby Haynes, the episode’s director, also spoke about the possibility of developing a spinoff. He shared with The Hollywood Reporter that Louise Sutton, the episode’s producer, had “cooked up a brilliant idea of spinning it off into a TV series.”
“I’d love to do a TV series of “USS Callister” — it’s probably one of the best pilots for a space show ever. And I made it! So I’m keen to see it as a TV series,” he continued.
Cristin Milioti, one of the main stars, couldn’t help but also share her enthusiasm about possibly revisiting her character Nanette Cole.
“I would die if they turned this into a spinoff series because I do want to see that group of people figure it out, because it’s so real. They’re very funny and very dysfunctional, but it’s also a group of coworkers from an office—it’s like The Office in space,” she said. “They’re stuck in this thing they didn’t even create and they would just have to battle aliens. It’s such an incredible concept. Maybe that’s wishful thinking on my part, but I would love to see that.”
The USS Callister spinoff series seems like mostly talk at this point, but we can’t help but cross our fingers and pray for it to become a reality!
