“Black Mirror” wished everyone a Happy New Year with a video that has us scared for 2018

Just before the new year, Black Mirror has graced us with a brand-new season — complete with six episodes to end 2017 on a truly dark note. But naturally, dropping the new season just before the new year isn’t just meant to snap us out of our holiday mindset — it’s also prepared to spook us into the new year.

On top of that, Charlie Brooker and the lovely people over at Black Mirror and Netflix just wished us all a Happy New Year by reminding us that the Black Mirror future is near — and probably a lot closer than we think. In honor of the newly released Season 4, the streaming giant posted a video that celebrates all four seasons of the hit series, while carefully reminding us that there are a lot of Black Mirror scenarios not too far from our own reality.

The somber tone for the video is set early on as U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May struggles during a speech right off the bat — and the video moves to “celebrate” 2017, from unnerving technical advances to new world leaders. The video even features a clip from a Mark Zuckerberg speech in which he says,”The future is built by the people who believe it can be better.” But as the trailer continues, it gets darker and darker — as a few of the most terrifying moments throughout the series are woven in, seemingly giving us a “preview” of what’s to come in 2018.

It seriously makes us wonder if we’ve been living in an episode of Black Mirror this whole time:

Honestly, as a Black Mirror fan, this is an amazing promo — and the perfect advert —  but as a person living in 2017, this is the most terrifying thing ever.

Frankly, we wouldn’t be devastated if 2018 was a stark change from 2017 — in that it’s nothing like the Black Mirror episode we’ve been living in — but if we’re living in an episode, can it please be “San Junipero.” Because at least that has a semblance of a happy ending.

So thanks, Black Mirror, by giving us the most perfect (and terrifying) welcome to 2018. We already can’ t wait for (a potential) Season 5.
