Really Weird Ways to Make Your Selfie Stand Out

There was a time, not so long ago, when the selfie was just a photograph you took of yourself. Then it became a celebrity phenomenon, a symbol of our constantly connected, self-gazing society, and a really great distraction while you were waiting for the train. These days,. it’s no longer enough to just take a picture of yourself, apply an Instagram filter and be done with it. Now you’ve got choices, really ridiculous choices. Here are some crazy ways to make your standard selfie stand out.

The Toasted Selfie:
If you were concerned that your own beautiful mug wasn’t sufficiently represented in, say, your kitchen appliances, you can now buy a $75 toaster from the Vermont Novelty Toaster Corp that will singe your favorite selfie into a piece of toast. Not even kidding:

The Strongly-Worded Selfie:
For those with a slightly more abstract sense of self, The American Heritage Dictionary will place your favorite lyrics or quotes all over a selfie of your own choosing. It’s like an Insta-filter, with a literary bent. Hello, new wall fillers!

The Famous Selfie:
But why stop there? There are various apps (Celebrity Selfie, Dream Selfie) that allow a savvy user to insert their photo into OTHER, MORE FAMOUS PEOPLE’S selfies. Remember that hilarious celeb-shot from this year’s Academy Awards? Well, thanks to technology — now, you can officially tell your friends that YOU WERE THERE, too!

The Selfie You Can Wear:
I know what you’re thinking: Once I eat the toast or leave my home, how will everyone else get to see my glowing visage? One Etsy designer is here to help. For the low, low price of $35.95, you can purchase a hand-made photo collage bracelet from Spotlight Jewelry.  This one is actually a great idea for a stocking stuffer—for those of you with a slightly selfless eye on the holiday horizon.

The Astronaut Selfie:
The Seattle-based Planetary Resources recently completed a $1 million fundraising campaign with the goal of launching your selfies into space.  With the use of a super-powerful telescope called the Arkyd, users can project their personal pictures into the atmosphere, and have their photo displayed like a hovering star above the planet. At least, that’s what the Arkyd’s Kickstarter page suggests. We’ll have to wait and see how that selfie start-up pans out.

In the meantime, kick back, snap a photo, toast it up and take a bite out of it. Welcome to the future, folks.
