The monsters from Bird Box apparently looked like giant toddlers, and yes, there are pictures
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Netflix’s apocalyptic thriller Bird Box dropped on December 13th to much fanfare (and a few ill-advised blindfold challenges). The thriller follows Malorie (Sandra Bullock), a woman attempting to protect her children as a mysterious, murderous force plagues the population. Survivors must avoid eye contact with the elusive monster, which manifests in the form of each person’s worst fear. While the elusive creature is never explicitly shown on film, director Susanne Bier recently revealed that prototypes of the monster were actually created early in the production process. In a January 7th interview, Bier told io9:
“There was a point where we were like, ‘Do we need to [show] it?' We got beautiful, beautiful designs and then realized, ‘No. No we’re not going to do it because it’s not really about that.'
On how the actors approached this mysterious force, she said, “Some of them asked about it. Some of them would ask me and I would then suggest certain things, and some of them would just not say anything and just kind of see whatever they had in their mind and be equally terrified and distraught. Each individual would have a different perception than the other individual.”
Luckily for fans, effects company SFX ATLAS took to Instagram to share a prototype of the OG creature from KNB Effects. While the OG image has since been taken down, a fan account re-shared it below:
Given that this elusive force manifests itself in the form of a person’s worst fear, we get why the creative team ultimately left the monster up to the viewer’s imagination—as terrifying as their prototype was.
Bird Box is available to stream on Netflix now.
