Bindi Irwin’s next big move is on the dance floor
Bindi may have initially become famous because of her father, the late, great Steve Irwin, but since then, she’s blossomed into fabulous, mature, awesome woman. Not only has she proved time and time again in interviews that she’s wise beyond her years, but she is a fabulous example to thousands of teenage girls everywhere of self-love and body positivity. She’s also carrying her father’s legacy by advocating for animal rights and working at the Australia Zoo.
And now, Bindi’s next move involves getting her groove on. That’s right: ABC announced today that the 17-year-old animal rights activist is joining Dancing with the Stars for the show’s 21st season. YAAAAS QUEEN.
“I am unbelievably thrilled and truly blessed to be in the City of Angels to be part of this season of Dancing With The Stars,” Bindi said in a statement on the show’s Facebook page. “This will be a completely new adventure for me and I’m excited to share my journey. Life is about daring to dream, I’m in love with this city and ready to fall in love with the music and dance to come.”
This is certainly a totally new step for Bindi, though one we’re sure she’ll conquer with flying colors. “This is completely different to anything I have ever done in my life,” Bindi told Good Morning America. “I am used to wrangling crocodiles.”
Oh right, badass Bindi just got back from an annual crocodile research trip in Australia. “About four days ago I was in far north Queensland catching crocs and now here I am in New York City, about to be in LA,” she told Good Morning America.
Bindi will be relocating temporarily to Los Angeles during the show. “I’m quite nervous about this,” she continued. “I have to tell you, though, they judges scare me more than crocodiles. They are so knowledgable. They’re supreme athletes. I’m just this girl from Australia who’s used to crocs so give me a 15-foot crocodile any day.”
Bindi is the first star of the season to join the team, but she will be joining ranks with some returning pros like Derek Hough, Val Chmerkovskiy, and Karina Smirnoff. We’ll be finding out the full list of this season’s DWTS stars on September 2nd when they’re announced on Good Morning America, and if they’re even close to as rad as Bindi, we are totally satisfied.
“It’s all about having the courage and strength,” Bindi told Good Morning America, “and, for me, it is something completely different but I hope that I am able to inspire others in their own lives to seize opportunity and to make a difference and just jump, take that leap, even if terrifies you.”
Bindi is certainly making that leap — though she has one request for her future dance partner. “I just hope my dance partner, whoever it is, is very patient and likes animals, because you never know what I’m going to bring to rehearsal,” she said.
The new season of DWTS debuts on September 14th on ABC. Stay tuned!
