Billy Ray Cyrus officially changed his name

Iconic country singer Billy Ray Cyrus first stole our hearts with his classic hit, “Achy Breaky Heart.” But now, Billy Ray Cyrus announced that he’s in the process of changing his name. While this might sound strange, the change has actually been a long time coming. The Hannah Montana alum apparently wanted to go by this name since before he was famous. Now that we know that, this move actually makes a ton of sense. So what is Billy Ray’s long awaited new name?

He’ll go by just Cyrus.

The singer will no longer be Billy Ray Cyrus, just Cyrus. That’s one name only instead of three. He explained the change in a recent interview with Rolling Stone.

He said, "After August 25th, I will be the artist formerly known as Billy Ray. I'm just going by my last name Cyrus. I always went by Cyrus, and I begged Mercury Records to call me Cyrus in the beginning because that’s what I was comfortable with. I’m going to the hospital where I was born in Bellefonte, Kentucky, and legally changing my name."

So while he is still legally Billy Ray for the time being, by the end of summer he will finally be going by the name he’s wanted since the very beginning. We think it’s awesome that Cyrus is doing this. It must have been frustrating to be known by a name that you don’t actually like going by for so long.

We’re glad that he is making the change soon!

So congratulations to the original Cyrus! This is an exciting change, and we wish him all the best!
