Billy Porter just made history at the 2019 Emmys, and legit everyone is cheering

The category is love. Billy Porter just won the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Pray Tell in Pose. But to him, this was a win for love, and we love him for this (plus much more). This historic accomplishment marks the first Emmy nomination and win by an openly gay black man. Porter couldn’t have received a more resounding standing ovation, and personally, we’re still cheering.

“I am so overwhelmed and I am so overjoyed to have lived long enough to see this day,” he said, as he accepted his Emmy.

Porter is now only one award away from an EGOT, which is winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

In 2013, he took home Best Musical Actor for Kinky Boots on Broadway. He then earned a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album for the original cast recording of the same show in 2014. Porter’s Emmy win tonight makes an Academy Award the only award left to add to his trophy room, and we have a sneaking suspicion he’ll accomplish it.

In his heartfelt speech, Porter referenced James Baldwin and validated the audience and millions of people at home.

"It took many years of vomiting up all the filth that I had been taught about myself and halfway believed before I could walk around this earth like I had the right to be here," Porter said. "I have a right to be here. You have a right to be here. We all have a right to be here."

Everyone is cheering on Porter, including fellow celebrities who are so happy about this historic win. Check out some of the thunderous reactions below.

Yep, Billy Porter deserves to be carried around on a litter by six men, now and forever.
