Billie Holiday is making a comeback as a hologram

Fifty-six years after her untimely death, Jazz legend Billie Holiday will be returning to the Apollo Theater stage in rare form.

The crafty folks at Hologram USA have teamed up with the Apollo to bring permanent, hologram technology to the theater, the New York Times reports. “Billie is going to be able to talk about the history of the Apollo,” Jonelle Procope, Apollo president, told the New York Times. “She can take questions from the audience in an interesting way. She can sing some songs”.

Considering Lady Day performed at the Apollo over 30 times since age 19, giving her the honor of being the Apollo’s first holographic guest was a no brainer.

Hologram USA, who famously “resurrected” Tupac for Coachella 2012, has a two-year contract with the Apollo. Within that time, they plan to utilize the technology in a number of creative ways. Y’know, aside from the whole Billie Holiday installment.

“When people see this, they’re going to understand the vast opportunities that we’ll have to bring some of these performances to life,” Procope told the New York Times. She even alluded to recreating famous performances with the technology (e.g. James Brown’s famous Apollo performance in 1962).

This announcement comes five months after what would have been Billie Holiday’s 100th birthday last April. Although there have been no official show dates announced, audiences will have access to the installation sometime in late November.
