Billie Eilish’s horrific new music video gets real about climate change

Oil-slicked wings and raging fires are the main images in Billie Eilish‘s music video for “All Good Girls Go To Hell.” And gotta say, the hell Eilish depicts in her video looks a lot like our reality in 2019. That’s not a coincidence. Eilish used her platform to get real about the climate crisis, and she is now urging her fans and followers to take action and show our world leaders how serious we are about the issue.

In the description of her music video—currently hovering in the No. 1 spot on YouTube’s trending page mere hours after going live on September 4th—Eilish included a note to those who watch.

"Right now there are millions of people all over the world begging our leaders to pay attention," the note reads. "Our earth is warming up at an unprecedented rate, icecaps are melting, our oceans are rising, our wildlife is being poisoned and our forests are burning. On September 23rd, the UN will host the 2019 Climate Action Summit to discuss how to tackle these issues. The clock is ticking. On Friday September 20th and Friday September 27th you can make your voice be heard. Take it to the streets."

She included a link to GlobalClimateStrike.net.

The Climate Strike is an international event that will take place on two separate dates: September 20th and September 27th. Millions have already vowed to step out of their workplaces, schools, and homes to march on the streets and demand action be taken against the continued use of fossil fuels.

According to NASA’s Global Climate Change website, the average surface temperature of our planet has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit since the end of the 19th century, with most of that warming occurring within the past 35 years. The rise in temperature was brought on by increased carbon dioxide and other human-created emissions within the atmosphere.

The five warmest years on record have taken place in the past 10 years alone, with 2016 being the warmest year recorded.

This trend is causing sea levels to rise, species to die out, and natural disasters to increase in strength and frequency. If nothing is done to combat the damage already done and in progress, not only will we destroy Earth, but we’ll destroy our society as well.

According to the Global Climate Strike’s homepage, the goal is to show world leaders that we will not stand for them sweeping climate change under the rug to keep their business dealings alive.

"These Climate Strikes won’t solve the climate crisis alone," the site reads. "What this moment can do is demonstrate that people are no longer willing to continue with business as usual. The urgency of the climate crisis requires a new approach and a just response [centered] on human rights, equity, and justice."
