The awesome reason Bill Murray came back for the new ‘Ghostbusters’
As you are probably well aware, there is a new lady-power Ghostbusters in the works, and we’re ridiculously excited about it. The movie stars four hilarious women — Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones As you are also probably well aware, this new Ghostbusters is a complete reboot of the OG Ghostbusters from back in the ’80s. That one stars the hilarious Bill Murray. And as you’ve maybe heard (from our excited squeals) Murray is actually back in action for this Ghostbusters 2.0. Now, what you probably don’t know is why he’s back ‘busting some ghosts. But we know now, and the reason is awesome.
At a recent screening of Murray’s brand new movie, Rock the Kasbah, Vulture caught up with him and asked the important questions. Why did he decide to return to Ghostbusters, after walking away from the franchise after the end of Ghostbusters 2 in 1989?
The short and sweet reason: Murray is appearing in Ghostbusters because he really likes the stars of the film. US TOO, MURRAY! Us too!! Apparently, when Wiig and McCarthy joined the cast he decided to hop on board. “I like those girls a lot,” he told Vulture. “I mean, I really do. They are tough to say no to. And Paul [Feig] is a real nice fellow.”
The decision to return wasn’t an easy one for Murray, who “thought about it for a very long time. Like, many, many months… for years, really.” Murray then got the idea in his head that if he didn’t show up in the movie, it might reflect poorly on the movie, and that the audience would see it as his “disapproval” of the reboot. That’s not the case by any means, so when he got the Ghostbusters call, he answered.
“You know, they were incredibly nice to ask me, and I really enjoyed being there,” Murray explained. “They have such a jolly group, and they are going to have great success with this project.” It’s like Murray can see the future or something.
There’s one more thing to note about his return to Ghostbusters, and it’s that Murray won’t be reprising his role as Peter Venkman. Instead, he’ll be appearing in a completely different role, rumored to be someone working against the brand new Ghostbusters crew. I know, crazy, right? This reboot is already blowing our minds.
