If you’d like to cry today, here goes: Watch the first trailer for “The Big Sick”
We’re both looking forward to and totally dreading watching Amazon’s The Big Sick, because it looks (and is said to be) totally wonderful, but also looks like it’s going to reeeeally break our hearts.
We were totally on board from the word GO, because the background of this movie is just so many things to love. It’s based on a true story (which is always the best), and it’s a rom com. There are so few rom coms in the world lately that that alone was enough to make us want to watch it. On top of that, it stars Kumail Nanjiani (the real guy from the real-life story, and an actor from Silicon Valley, yooo). It’s directed by Michael Showalter, who only does good work, and produced by Judd Apatow and Barry Mendel. Like, what more could we ask for?
Apparently the answer to that is a box of tissues because oh my god, this trailer hurts.

Not only does the film just look great, but it has a high AF score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, which we can almost always count on. And although Judd Apatow might give you some hesitation when envisioning this movie — a complex and dynamic woman falling for a mediocre guy? Some fairly serious subject matter!? — rest assured that The Big Sick is said to be both entertaining and tug at your heartstrings.
In the words of Time Out’s glowing review:
"The film is saying something both obvious and unusually wise: When you want someone, you often have to woo their parents. But more subtly, The Big Sick implies that if the love is real, the wooing can happen even when you’re lying unconscious on the brink of death ...And we thought we were watching a Judd Apatow film."
So yeah. Bring on the waterworks.
