The 7 juiciest Big Little Lies fan theories, because Season 2 is going to be bonkers
As we not-so-patiently await the Season 2 premiere of Big Little Lies (it returns June 9th!), fans are buzzing about what to expect from the ladies of Monterey after the bombshell of an ending in Season 1. In the meantime, we’ve rounded up some of the best theories about what might go down in Season 2 of the hit HBO series. We’re warning you now—there are huge spoilers ahead. So if you haven’t finished Season 1, you’ll want to proceed with caution.
Season 2 picks up right where Season 1 left off. At long last, we’ll soon learn more about the aftermath of Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) killing Perry (Alexander Skarsgård). And, of course, we can’t wait to see what made Reese Witherspoon’s character Madeline hurl an ice cream cone at series newbie Meryl Streep (aka Mary Louise Wright). Here are some of the best and juiciest theories about Big Little Lies Season 2. Buckle up, because we have a feeling it’s going to be epic.
1Perry’s mom is in town to investigate her son’s mysterious death.
As soon as it was announced that Streep was on board to play the mother of the not-so-dearly departed Perry, we were stoked. She’s obviously touched down in the sandy shores of Monterey to look into her son’s death, but we still have so many questions. Will Mary suspect that it was Perry’s wife, Celeste (Nicole Kidman)? And was it her behind those binoculars watching the women on the beach?
2Bonnie’s parents and family history will play a part.
In the book on which the show is based, Madeline learns that Bonnie grew up with an abusive father, which might have triggered her intense emotions surrounding Perry’s domestic abuse toward Celeste. In a 2018 interview with Refinery29, Kravitz said that limiting much of Bonnie’s backstory was a deliberate attempt to keep fans from guessing the shocking ending. “There is a lot more of Bonnie in Season 2,” she said. “Now [we’re] revealing who she is, why she is the way she is, and why she did what she did. I don’t think you will be disappointed.”
3There will be another murder in Monterey.
Though we’re sure much of Season 2 will be spent investigating Perry’s murder, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that someone else might lose their life, too. In a statement made by HBO back in 2017, the network said, “relationships will fray, loyalties will erode [and] the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom” which sounds oh-so-eerie…and definitely a bit grim.
4Renata will get her due.
Though she was an outsider among the Monterey moms in Season 1, social media photos from the cast throughout filming seem to indicate that the tides are a-changing for Renata (Laura Dern) in the second season.
5Madeline’s marital secrets will all be unraveled.
After Madeline had an extramarital affair and things were noticeably rocky between her and her husband Ed (Adam Scott), it makes sense that Season 2 might explore more of what’s going on there. In 2018, Variety announced that Scott would reprise his role, writing that Ed would be “forced to confront major challenges in his marriage to Madeline.”
6Jane and Celeste will bond in a big way.
Now that Jane has revealed to the group that it was Perry, Celeste’s husband, who sexually assaulted her and fathered her son, Ziggy, it’s no secret that the dynamic between the two women is sure to change—especially in the wake of Perry’s death. Just how the dynamic will change remains to be seen, but given that their children are half-siblings, we think they might feel a closer kinship with each other now.
7Did Perry actually die?
Okay, hear us out here. We know that Skarsgård will be back, but will it just be by way of flashbacks? At the 2018 Golden Globes, the actor joked, “I don’t even know if I’m really dead or not. I feel okay right now but we’ll see.” But was it a joke? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Is it June 9th yet? We can’t wait to see if any of these Big Little Lies fan theories come true.
