What?! Beyoncé’s “Formation” lyric about Red Lobster was *almost* something totally different
Anyone else in the mood for seafood and cheddar bay biscuits? We know, it’s kind of early for all that, but blame our not-so-random craving on finally discovering the origin of Beyoncé’s “Formation” Red Lobster lyric. According to Pitchfork, producer Mike WiLL Made-It (who has worked with everyone from Rihanna to Miley Cyrus) did an interview with Red Bull Music Academy in which he spilled the deets on the infamous lyric that launched a bazillion Red Lobster sales.
Apparently, Slim Jxmmi of hip hop duo Rae Sremmurd wrote the original line, “If he f*ck me good/I’ll take his ass to Margiela,” referring to the high-end luxury brand Maison Margiela. The idea was subsequently submitted to Beyoncé, who put her spin on it to bring us the lyric that we’ve all come to know, love and use as an excuse to pull up to Red Lobster at breakneck speed and eat ALL of the biscuits.
In the interview, Mike WiLL Made-It also provides a few other interesting details about how he and Rae Sremmurd collaborated with Bey on the entire concept of “Formation,” which begins around the 1:30:00 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZntZABMj5E
Given Queen Bey’s unparalleled level of fabulousness, we are oh so grateful to her for changing that lyric. Seriously, do you know how much Red Lobster you can eat for the money you spent on Maison Margiela cosmetics during Sephora’s Cyber Monday sale? We’re no math geniuses, but we figure that’s a couple of date nights out with bae or four individual meals if you’re dining alone.
That said, we have to send formal thanks to Beyoncé for encouraging us to get ourselves and our financial priorities in formation.
