Betty White’s Daytime Emmy Awards speech made us laugh (and cry)
On Sunday, television legend Betty White received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmy Awards. The 93-year-old actress, who got her start in 1949 and won her first Emmy in 1951 for a show she starred in and produced called Life With Elizabeth, was her usual hilarious self when she stepped up to the microphone. She was also extremely grateful for the honor, one that she undoubtedly deserves many times over.
“I have been in this business for a long time,” White said in her speech. “You may not notice that, but when I started in . . . 1949 I had no idea that I would still be around at this point, for one thing. But that I’d still be privileged enough to still be in this business, and it is such a privilege.”
White’s career has been incredible. She’s one of the icons of TV, starring in hit shows for seven decades. From The Mary Tyler Moore Show, to Golden Girls, to Hot In Cleveland, she’s been blazing a trail for women since her first role in 1945. She first became a household name in the ’50s when she starred as Elizabeth on the television series Life With Elizabeth (remember, that Emmy we mentioned a couple paragraphs above?).
All these years later, White continues to be an inspiration to women in the entertainment industry and outside of it. And even at the age of 93, she’s still embracing fame, comedy, and the love her fans have for her.
White made a big nod to the longevity of her career, saying in her speech: “All those years that I had no idea I’d still be working though [are] so much thanks to you and your mothers and fathers and grandmothers and grandfathers. And a couple of great grandfathers when I was younger.” Of course she said it with a wink, that made the audience roar with laughter.
She’s still got it. We loved seeing a lady we love receive such a ridiculously-deserved honor! Check out her incredibly lovely (and LOL-worthy) speech:
