After months of social media trolling, Bette Midler finally gave us a straight answer about ‘Hocus Pocus 2’
There’s finally some real news about the long-rumored Hocus Pocus 2, and you’re not going to like it.
Hocus Pocus, as you know because we just left the Halloween season, is one of the best, if not THE best Halloween movie ever made. It stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sistaaahs. They’re witches from long ago who come back to life on All Hallows’ Eve and run amok all over Salem, Massachusetts. After an all-night struggle between the sistaaahs and a group of teenagers (which include both human teenagers, and also an immortal cat named Binx who’s trying to save his sister’s soul from 1693, as you do), the sistaaaahs are defeated and turn to dust as the sun rises. With the sistaaaaahs gone, it’s not necessarily an easy transition into a sequel. But that has never stopped Hollywood before!
For the past few years there’s been an amazing rumor that Hocus Pocus would receive the sequel treatment, and Midler herself fed a lot into this black flame. Now, in a Facebook Q&A session, she’s given us the answer we’ve been waiting for, but it’s not the answer we actually wanted.
One fan asked the question on everyone’s mind: Is there going to be a Hocus Pocus 2? Midler answered with a no in writing, “After all these years and all the fan demand, I do believe I can stand and firmly say an unequivocal no.”
But. But. Buuuuuutttttttt . . . Can you guys hear my heart breaking? Because it is. Maybe the fact is that a Hocus Pocus sequel would simply be too good for this world, so it can never happen.
Even though Midler is saying “NO,” I still believe in magic. I’m going to move forward with my life assuming that somewhere, in some office on the Disney lot, some executive is still mulling over the idea of green-lighting a Hocus Pocus project. I might even be OK with a Hocus Pocus reboot.
But I really don’t want to wait 300 years for it.
