The TV shows that kept us from socializing all year long

If it’s not already apparent from our end of the year coverage thus far, there was definitely one thing everybody agreed on: Broad City really sucked, huh? Nobody watched that. Kidding, of course! It’s a favorite of Hello Giggles editors and contributors, as were the rest of the shows on this list.

Black Mirror

Piper Weiss: Black Mirror is Britain’s answer to the Twilight Zone and my answer to insomnia-haunted late nights on Netflix. Each episode tells an eerie tale of modern technology’s imagined effects on the human condition. I’ll just say the first episode of season one is a must watch.

Jane the Virgin

Caroline Gerdes: Jane the Virgin was my favorite fall premiere — it’s like Ugly Betty, Pushing Daisies, and Gilmore Girls had a baby. Also, I must use this space to say I was disappointed by HIMYM‘s finale and am totally #TeamMother.

Weird or What?

Amelia Olson: It’s true I’ve had a crush on William Shatner since the early ’90s, but this show is the modern day Unsolved Mysteries — it’s comical and curious.

Broad City

Elena Sheppard: I had plans to go out one Friday night but my roommate was watching Broad City. I sat down and did not get up until we had finished the entire season.

Orange Is the New Black

Sophia Elias: Where do I begin? I love the fact that they were open to using unknown actors from all different backgrounds. The writing, the story lines, the humanity of it all — it’s an amazing show that takes us in a lot of surprising directions.

True Detective

Lindsey Robertson: CARCOSA!

How to Get Away with Murder

Rachel Grate: Watching it with my friend and a glass of wine at the end of a stressful week — there’s nothing more relaxing. I just can’t get enough Shondaland!

You’re the Worst

Erin Mallory Long: This along with Transparent and Jane the Virgin. TV is doing great right now! I hope these shows continue for years.

Veep

Brittany Allen: Veep is one of the most caustic (and IMHO, hilarious) of the shows about Capitol Hill. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is just stellar, and the writing is spot-on.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Rachel Paige: This has been my favorite new show of this past year—and it’s educational!

Shameless (season 4)

Gina Vaynshteyn: For all my Shameless fangirls and guys, it was a TOUGH season to watch this year, right? Fiona got into some major, major trouble with the law after she almost (accidentally) killed her little brother, Liam. She ruined a perfect good (albeit, boring), stable relationship. And Frank was on his deathbed. Literally, he was on a bed, dying and trying to con his way to a new liver. And Lip? Lip was just gorgeous as usual, doing his college thing and flipping people off.Shameless, without fail, is always so incredibly gripping and emotional. I love Emmy Rossum as Fiona, and William H. Macy brilliantly plays a selfish alcoholic father. I seriously can’t wait for what this next season brings! Even the Gallaghers might be capable of a fresh start (or not).

SherlockGina Mei: When Season 3 came out on Netflix earlier this year, I wrapped myself in a blanket, plopped down on the couch, and did not get up until I was done with all three glorious, 1.5-hour long episodes (with the exception of the occasional emotionally-charged jump of glee, because I’m a nerd and I just have a lot of feelings when it comes to Sherlock, ok?).
