Here are the best scary movies on Netflix for your next Halloween movie night

Pumpkin spice lattes, costume stores appearing on every corner, and a sudden surge of sparkly fake pumpkins at Hobby Lobby can only mean one thing — Halloween is almost here! There’s no better way to get in the spooky spirit than to cuddle up under a warm blanket and binge-watch a bunch of Halloween movies on Netflix. I’ve compiled a collection of movies for the season, from the truly horrifying to actually mild (for super wimps like me). When I say super wimp, I mean I won’t watch American Horror Story, refuse to go to a haunted house, and passing by those Halloween decorations with motion sensors that come alive when you walk by will have my heart racing for over an hour. There’s something for everyone on this list of 10 Netflix movies to get you into the Halloween spirit.

Scream (1996)

If you haven’t seen this movie, we’re judging you. Starring Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette, it’s a classic! It’s also directed by Wes Craven, which means it’s perfect for the Halloween season. In fact, you might as well go ahead and watch all of the sequels, too.

The Babadook (2014)

I don’t dare watch this movie, but from what I hear, it’s one of the best psychological horror films made in a long time and it’s absolutely terrifying. The Babadook is about a widowed woman and her son who are haunted by an evil entity that enters their home through the pages of a children’s book. If you want to scare the pants off yourself and have nightmares for a week, add this one to your watch list.

Children of the Corn (1984)

This horror movie is one I can watch because it’s old enough that the low-quality special effects help remind me that it’s not real life. Children of the Corn is one of those classic horror movies worth watching if you’ve never seen it before. The film is about a couple trapped in a creepy town where a bunch of children emerge from cornfields to kill people over the age of 18.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

I’m not sure why this is deemed a children’s movie because it seriously creeps me out (See? Total wimp), but according to normal people and the Internet, it’s suitable for all ages. It’s a Tim Burton film, and you can’t really go wrong with anything of his during the Halloween season. Also check out Corpse Bride if this movie is your style.

Silence of the Lambs (1991)

This isn’t a typical Halloween movie, but it should get you in the spirit of the holiday. Plus, it’s one of the best thrillers of all time. The movie is so stinkin’ good it makes me forget I’m watching a movie about Hannibal Lecter —a cannibalistic serial killer. Another must-watch if you’ve never seen it!

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

You can’t have a Halloween marathon without throwing Sleepy Hollow into the mix. The tale of Ichabod Crane is a well-known one, and this version stars Johnny Depp, so what more could you really want?

The Addams Family (1991)

America’s favorite creepy family! Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, and the rest of the family are a Halloween staple. Plus, roughly 50% of the females on this planet dress up as Wednesday Addams each year, so we might as well honor her by watching the film.

The Crow (1994)

This cult classic is one you could watch all year round, but it fits perfectly with the season. A musician and his fiancee are brutally murdered on October 30th (Devil’s Night), and he rises from the dead as a supernatural avenger. If you can’t fit this one onto your watch list this month, remind yourself to watch it later anyway.

Odd Thomas (2013)

So this is a fun, quirky, little sci-fi flick that definitely deserves your attention. Based on the novels of Dean Koontz, Odd (yes, that’s really the character’s name) is a clairvoyant who fights dark forces only he can see. There’s a bit of romance sprinkled in, and enough scares to keep you satisfied. Added bonus: Willem Defoe plays a local cop who teams up with Odd.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

This is easily one of the creepiest films ever made. If you haven’t seen it, then you’ve been living under a rock and you need to fix that. Even I’ve watched this one, so it’s wimp-approved. Halloween is the perfect time of year to revisit this cinematic gem starring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment.
