The best new books to read this week: The Lost Night, Vacuum in the Dark, and more
Maybe it’s because the 2019 Oscars were last night, but I have movies on the brain. Specifically, movies based on books. There were quite a few nominees and winners at last night’s ceremony that began as books: The Wife by Meg Wolitzer, Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth, and If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin, to name a few. I’m bummed that awards show season is officially over. But I’m excited about the next crop of books that could potentially be turned into movies (and TV shows, too). And reader, I could see any of the best new books coming out this week being a smash hit at the box office. Read on to see if you agree.
1The Lost Night by Andrea Bartz, out February 26th
In 2009, Edie’s friends were shocked to learn of her suicide after a long night of drinking. Now, 10 years later, her best friend Lindsay is learning more about what really happened that night. Prepare yourself for some serious plot twists.
2Vacuum in the Dark by Jen Beagin, out February 26th
Vacuum in the Dark is a follow-up to Pretend I’m Dead, but it more than shines as a standalone story. It’s a dark, funny novel about a housekeeper named Mona and her wacky clients. We dare you not to laugh out loud while you read it.
3The Huntress by Kate Quinn, out February 26th
This highly original World War II novel follows three characters: Ian, a Nazi hunter; Nina, a pilot shot down behind enemy lines who faces off against a Nazi murderess known as the Huntress; and Jordan, a 17-year-old who is suspicious of her father’s new fiancée. The entire book is captivating, but you’ll especially love learning more about Nina’s past in the Night Witches, a (real!) badass group of all-female bombers.
4What We Buried by Kate A. Boorman, out February 26th
Liv and her brother Jory couldn’t be more different. But they do have one thing in common: a mutual disdain for their parents, who just went missing. So, they embark on a road trip to figure out what happened—and the truth slowly reveals itself. What We Buried is a spooky and satisfying YA thriller that will give you a lot to think about.
5Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Glendy Vanderah, out March 1st
This is the extraordinary story of Jo, a woman mourning the loss of her mother, and Ursa, a mysterious girl who shows up announced at her door. Ursa claims that she’s been sent down from the stars to witness five miracles. Jo lets her stay, curious to find out where she really came from. Where the Forest Meets the Stars is a magical little gem of a book filled with lots of love and hope.
