The Best Movie-Making Cliques on the Block
Best friends do everything together: they laugh, they cry, they travel, they party, they marathon TV shows, and they make blockbuster films. And, let’s be real, who wouldn’t want to churn out films on the regular when your BFFs are uber-talented actors, writers, and producers? Check out these movie-making cliques who love working together over and over again and make movies we totally love to watch:
The Wes Anderson Troop
Wes Anderson is the ringleader of this pack usually made up of players like the Wilson brothers, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Anjelica Houston, Bob Balaban, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Kumar Pallana, Jeff Goldblum, and Tilda Swinton. No matter the combo, the result is always stylish and quirky.
The Apatow Gang
Judd Apatow is the kingpin of the gang that includes actor/writers like Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell, Leslie Mann, Jane Lynch, Rose Byrne, and Kristen Wiig. Judd’s gang is a loyal one, since he’s been working with Rogen, Segel, and Franco since way back when they starred together in Freaks and Geeks. Apparently up next for Apatow is a film called Trainwreck written by Amy Schumer and it’ll nice to see some new actor/writers getting into the mix.
Those Offbeat Brits
Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg launched a movement all its own starting with Shaun of the Dead. Their collaborators include Nick Frost, Bill Nighy, Martin Freeman, and Rafe Spall. With the Cornetto trilogy complete, I hope they get cracking on something new soon.
Coen Bros. & Co.
Those wacky Coen brothers sure can put together a great go-to stable of performers: Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, Jeff Bridges, George Clooney, Frances McDormand, and John Turturro. They always seem to have awesomely bizarre and well-written material to work with and I can’t wait to see what’s up with their upcoming projects Harve Karbo and Hail, Caesar!
Stiller, Etc.
Stiller is basically the lynchpin in this bunch, though it’s since splintered into many different bunches. Members include Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Danny McBride and Luke Wilson. This bunch pretty much runs Hollywood comedies to an extent and overlaps a ton with the Apatow gang. With Zoolander 2 and Dodgeball 2 in the works, this frat pack shows no signs of slowing down.
The David O. Russell Trio
David O. Russell has the magic combo of Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence bringin’ home his bacon. I think it’s his personal mission to send at least one of them to the Oscars every year. The trio has only worked together twice so far, but methinks this is the beginning of a new clique. I mean, Jen has agreed to star in his next movie where she plays the inventor of the Miracle Mop. So, yeah. I’d say his actors are devoted.
And let us not forget the dynamic duos of the clique world:
These ladies are forming the newest and best clique on the movie block, having started their film collab with Mean Girls and then creating the formidable Baby Mama. Obviously they worked together for ages before that in the UCB and SNL families, climbing the comedy ranks together. Up next they’ll work together on The Nest and I couldn’t be more excited!
Quentin/Uma
So he’s a little obsessed with her and has a foot fetish, big whoop! If that’s what it takes to make movies like Kill Bill, so be it.
Martin/Leo
Maybe Marty will help Leo win his Oscar one day. Marty’s took forever so maybe working with him helps give Leo an everlasting hope.
Whedon/Fillion
They love each other. We love them. Keep making things, guys!
Honorable mention to Burton/Depp but, let’s be honest, they seriously need to step up their game as of late.
