Two best friends made a powerful video that asks us to reconsider the cruel things we say about our own bodies

Social media can often be a tool for negativity, creating feelings of despair in some users. The ability to remain anonymous leaves many internet folk feeling free to let out their darkest thoughts, sometimes onto unsuspecting and vulnerable victims.

However, not everyone wants to use social media to spread negativity.

In honor of World Mental Health Day, which was on October 10th, two best friends have released a video with The Scene to bring awareness to the negativity that many individuals face daily.

These two best friends, Tiffany and Alyssa, redefine how we think of small talk.

Tiffany deals with body image issues, and Alyssa battles anorexia. In the video, both women have written down some of the demeaning thoughts that they’ve had about themselves in regards to their bodies, appearances, and weight. But instead of dwelling on those thoughts, these girls have chosen to say these thoughts aloud — but directed at each other.

Of course, when we talk about positive mental health, it’s a popular notion to advise individuals not to say anything about themselves that they wouldn’t say to a friend.

However, that's exactly the purpose of the video -- to bring awareness and a new light on the consequences that can come from negative self-talk and mental health.

Even before the conversation begins, both girls begin crying. The reality of how hard it is to deal with mental heath is clear — even with the statistics proving that these girls are hardly alone.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association, there are 20 million women and 10 million men who suffer from “a clinically significant eating disorder at some point in their lives.” Along with that, DoSomething.org reports that “approximately 91 percent of women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body type (that only 10 percent of American women naturally possess).”

We greatly admire these two young women for using their friendship to discuss body image struggles in such a profound way.
