11 of the best memes that came out of the 2018 Golden Globes

The 2018 Golden Globes ceremony was eventful, to say the least. Actors hit the red carpet wearing black as part of the Time’s Up movement against sexual assault and harassment. Oprah made a game-changing speech. Tommy Wiseau…was there. This year’s show was about more than funny, memorable moments. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t also get great Golden Globes memes out of the deal.

The 2017-2018 awards season was bound to be more politically charged than usual. There are important reasons for that. But Hollywood is about entertainment as well as social commentary, and our favorite stars certainly did entertain us while making long overdue statements about gender equality. Overall, it was a big night.

Without further ado, here are the best 2018 Golden Globes memes:

1Everyone was loving Oprah.

The internet is abuzz with talk of “Oprah Winfrey 2020” following her incredible speech. Winfrey is the first black woman to win the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement award, per CBS. Talk about making history!

2Natalie Portman delivered a scene-stealing dig.

People were allll about Natalie Portman’s pointed comment about the all-male list of nominees for Best Director. It was even more powerful because she made it while presenting the award.

3This Seth Meyers jab was a hit.

4The mood on the carpet was more subdued than usual…

But that didn’t stop online commentators from some good-natured ribbing.

5Stranger Things fans couldn’t hide their disappointment.

The show didn’t pick up any awards.

6Viewers loved this Tom Hanks moment.

We did too, to be honest.

7Celebs eating burgers are all of us.

They may be rich and famous, but they still crave burgers after a big night out.

8I, Tonya got really real for one audience member.

9Hugh Jackman’s facial expressions spawned many a meme.

This one is our favorite.

10Everyone loves an excuse to bring up Harry Potter.

Twitter loved this reunion moment between Emma Watson and Robert Pattinson.

11But Debra Messing won the entire night.

It’s really worth clicking through to see his entire thread.

‘Til next year!
