Looks like we’ll have to wait even longer for Benedict Cumberbatch’s ‘Sherlock’ return

No matter what language you say it in, “Sherlock isn’t coming back yet” is a horrible sentence. A better sentence would be, “Sherlock season 4 premiers tomorrow!” Or even, “Sherlock season 4 is already on Netflix so let’s go binge it!” But alas, we aren’t that lucky today. We won’t see Sherlock season 4 for at least another YEAR, if not LONGER.

Thankfully, the show is coming back. This isn’t a scenario where we’re not sure if Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch, love love love) and his bestie, John Watson (Martin Freeman, love love love, too), will ever return to our television sets. They’re coming back. It’s just going to take them a while. According to Steven MofatSherlock‘s co-creator, writer, and executive producer — filming for season 4 will begin in the Spring of 2016. It’s Spring 2015 now, though, so this means we’re going to wait. And then we’re going to wait some more. And then we’re going to keep on waiting until Sherlock comes back. By the time it comes back, we’re going to be pros at waiting.

Moffat did offer up a tiny tease about the new season, telling Digital Spy that “It’s dark in some ways — obviously it’s great fun and a Sherlock romp and all that — but there’s a sense of things coming back to bite you.” Last episode of season 3 saw Sherlock kill Charles Augustus Magnussen, and then Moriarty maaaybe came back from the dead. Those are two things that definitely have consequences.

There’s a tiny bright side to this: we’re still going to get Sherlock in 2015. Er, hopefully. There’s actually a Victorian-era  Sherlock “special” episode that’s going to air during the 2015 holiday season, probably around Christmas or New Years on the BBC… in the UK. The U. S. of A. probably won’t see it around Christmas or New Years, which means we’ll have to wait for it, just like we’re already waiting for Sherlock season 4. SO MUCH WAITING.

So in the meantime, we can look at this picture of Sherlock and Watson in Victorian clothing. This will hold us over for a little while. Sherlock’s clearly pointing at season 4 of Sherlock waaaaaaaay off in the distance.
