Ben McKenzie revealed why he and Morena Baccarin got married on her birthday

Getting married is one of those life events you tend to want to be absolutely perfect, which is why so many people have so much trouble picking a date. It can be a tough choice, and it’s why we were a little surprised to hear that Ben McKenzie and Morena Baccarin got married on her birthday this past summer.

The Gotham star stopped by Harry and revealed the logic behind the somewhat unusual decision to host Harry Connick Jr.  He said that they really wanted to get married at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, but when they called about a year in advance, the place was booked solid. (That alone is one reason to never scoff at your friends’ wedding planning woes. It’s cutthroat!)

The only day that was available at the gorgeous location was June 2nd, aka Morena’s birthday. She was totally fine with getting hitched on her b-day, but there was one little catch. “It is sweet, or so I thought,” the actor said.

Until she told him that he’d have to be very, very careful moving forward.

McKenzie explained,“It’s sweet, and half of her loves [that it was her birthday] and I think she just wants me to be clear that she is going to get a birthday present and there is going to be an anniversary gift and it's a whole week. She's Brazilian and birthdays are very special.

TBH, we have never related to something more.

Those of us born on or around big holidays know the struggle is real — people often forget your special day, and you even can get shafted in the present department. Just ask anyone with a birthday in December.

In any case, McKenzie has an open mind about this whole two presents thing. He considers it a good way to gauge the health of their marriage. “The good news is if I do it right, it’s going to be a great year every year, if I hit June 2nd we are good but if I forget anniversary and birthday, it’s going to be a bad year,” he laughed.

The man has a point — you can’t possibly forget both.

The two met on the set of Gotham and went public with their relationship in September of 2015. In March 2016, they had their daughter, Frances Laiz Setta Schenkkan, and were engaged shortly after. So far, it’s been such a cute love story to watch evolve. Now let’s just hope McKenzie doesn’t forget to make June 2nd extra special…
