Ben & Jerry’s has a marriage equality flavor (and it’s called “I Dough, I Dough”)!
If you’ve been on social media the last couple of days, you’ve probably seen a whole ton of rainbows (and happiness and love and amazingness). Why? Because yesterday morning, the Supreme Court ruled that states can no longer ban same-sex couples from marrying in America. That’s right: Gay marriage is legal in all 50 states! Our future children will no longer have to experience living in a country where somebody’s love isn’t legally recognized. BRB, might start crying with happiness again.
There’s no wrong way to commemorate this amazing, wonderful, groundbreaking moment in history, so why not do it with ice cream? That’s why Ben & Jerry‘s recently announced a marriage equality flavor — and, as always, it’s adorably, wonderfully punny. The flavor, which was once simply called “Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough,” has been renamed “I Dough, I Dough” (D’AWW) for the summer. As you’d expect, it’s comprised of vanilla ice cream with gobs of chocolate chip cookie dough.
“Across the country and around the globe, the movement for marriage equality is on an unstoppable roll, generating history-making victories, game-changing wins and growing waves of public support for legalizing same-sex marriage everywhere,” Ben & Jerry’s said in a statement on their site. “With this ruling, the SCOTUS recognizes the bond of love and commitment between two people, and protects the fundamental rights and freedoms that come with it.”
Well said, Ben & Jerry’s. Along with their statement, the company also posted a gorgeously touching YouTube video entitled “Love Is Love,” featuring Tori and Shante Wolf-Sission, the first same-sex couple to be married in Alabama.
“I do expect a marriage to be respected by the rest of society,” Tori says in the video. “I don’t expect for someone to respond with ‘It’s two girls, it’s not real.’ All of the ‘to have, and to hold’. . . it’s so cliche. But that’s it. It’s through thick and thin, whatever is happening, however I can be supportive, I’m there.”
“If people could be less [intolerant] and more accepting–if that could happen in the South–than the world has something to look at as an example,” Tori continues.
Oh, our hearts. Thanks, Ben & Jerry’s, for this amazingly beautiful (and tasty) tribute to a day that will go down in history forever.
