Ben Affleck still hasn’t decided if he’s done playing Batman, and dude just make up your mind
If you think you’re indecisive at times, you should have a talk with Ben Affleck. Our current Batman isn’t so sure he wants to be Batman anymore, and add this to the long list of will-he-or-won’t-he play the caped crusader. Because right now, Affleck as Batman doesn’t seem so certain.
Affleck’s latest movie as Bruce Wayne by day, Batman by night, Justice League, lands in theaters on November 17th. In it, Affleck plays Batman, obviously. But after Justice League? For the next DC Extended Universe™ outing? For the stand-alone Batman movies? All of that is up in the air, because he might be hanging up his cape and closing the door on the Bat Cave once and for all.
This uncertainty with AffleckBatGate isn’t anything new. This past summer, word broke at Comic-Con that Warner Bros. was considering not using Affleck as Batman going forward — and then Affleck took the SDCC stage and said like, 15 times, “I’m Batman,” and it wasn’t awkward or anything. Affleck’s younger brother then (maybe accidentally) made an off-hand comment about Affleck not returning to the role. And not only that, Affleck was slated to direct the movie, and earlier this year dropped out of it.
Since then, no one has quite figured out what’s happening with Batman, let alone with Affleck as Batman. Cleaning up the Gotham City streets? No, just clean up all of this Batman mess.
And now, in a new interview with USA Today ahead of Justice League, Affleck is once again adding fuel to the AffleckBatGate rumor mill. When asked about an upcoming, solo Batman film, Affleck response that it’s “something [he’s] contemplating,” meaning that he doesn’t even know one way or the other.
If that’s not enough, Affleck then hints that he’s already working on an exit plan from the DCEU, explaining, “You don’t [play this character] forever, so I want to find a graceful and cool way to segue out of it.”
Without outright stating it, Affleck is very much hinting at his exit. But exit as the character, or the complete exit OF the character? He could hang up his cowl and someone else could pick it up, and continue on with the franchise as Batman. Or the DCEU could write out Batman, and send him off to live a happy life away from crime in Gotham. However, seeing as how the DCEU is just getting started, the latter seems unlikely. Which means, we’ll probably have *another* new Batman soon.
Well, you know what they say, Batman today…uh, not Batman tomorrow.
