Ben Affleck got Batman advice from George Clooney AND Christian Bale
You guys, it turns out the Movie Batmans are friends. If this isn’t the occasion to throw a Level 97 fangirl freakout, we don’t know WHAT is.
So here’s the scuttlebutt: As PEOPLE reports, Ben Affleck spoke to Good Morning America‘s Jesse Palmer about receiving advice from the Batmans who had come before him.
“I talked to Clooney and he gave me some advice which is not repeatable,” Affleck told Palmer. “And I talked to Christian, who just told me to make sure I got a zipper in the suit, which was valuable, practice advice as it turned out.”
Of course, this answer only leads to more questions, the first of which is WHAT WAS CLOONEY’S ADVICE? Was it scandalous? Was it sexytime bedroom eyes Batman advice? Or was it like that sealed letter that the outgoing President leaves for the incoming President in the Oval Office? Did Clooney reveal to Affleck the most classified advice for playing Batman, advice that was, like, made up by the Illuminati?
To add to the mystery, it turns out Clooney originally was going to refuse to give Affleck any Batman advice at all. As he told Empire Online in the wake of the Batman vs Superman announcement in 2013, “I am the least qualified person to comment on anyone playing the role of Batman since I so terribly destroyed the part…He is a smart man, he knows what he is doing.”
We think Clooney is being a little hard on himself (though, real talk, we were nine-year-olds the last time we saw Batman and Robin so our memories might not be the most reliable sources here), but clearly he figured out SOME advice to give the Batfleck. If only it wasn’t a secret, we hate secrets.
Moving on, let’s talk about the whole peeing while wearing the Batman suit thing that Christian Bale brought up. It turns out Bale did not have the luxury of a zipper in his Dark Knight days, which is why he has been so insistent on Affleck learning from the error of his ways.
In fact, this is not the first time Bale has given Affleck Batman peeing advice. In 2013, Bale explained to Access Hollywood that he REALLY didn’t want peeing to be an issue for Affleck while filming Batman vs. Superman:
“The only thing I said to him was to make sure to [be able to] take a piss without having anyone help him, because it’s a little bit humiliating,” Bale explained. “You have to have someone … help you out of the costume in order to be able to do that. So that was my main piece of advice for him.”
Bale boiled down the same advice this year at Comic-Con with one-liner: “Make sure you can piss in that suit!”
No word on if fellow former Movie Batmans Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton had advice for the Batfleck, but when asked in 2013, Keaton told TMZ that he was confident that Affeck was “going to be great.”
And TV Batman Adam West, like Bale, had a piece of practical advice for the Batfleck in the wake of the announcement:
We love all these Batmans supporting the newest member of their tribe (and, of course, making sure that all’s good with Batfleck’s bladder and body odor). Batfriends forever!!!
