Bella Hadid reveals the one thing about her that surprises people the most
With Twitter posts, Instagram pics, and constant paparazzi shots, it can be easy to feel like we personally know our favorite celebs. But in actuality, famous people are complicated, three-dimensional humans just like the rest of us, and there’s no way to really know someone without, well, really knowing them. And model Bella Hadid is no stranger to this phenomenon, which is why she sat down for an interview with sister Gigi to bust a major misconception that she often reads about herself.
In the interview, which appears in the June/July 2018 issue of Harpers Bazaar, Bella noted how strange she finds it that she’s often perceived as “serious” or “stern.”
"People always say I have the same facial expressions," she said to Gigi. "But what they don’t realize is that for a long time I looked that way because photographers on set would direct me to look 'bored' or 'very nonchalant.' But it isn’t necessarily the way I really am. You’ve known me, of course, my whole life. And ever since I was a baby, I was always smiling."
She went on to say, “When people would say, ‘Oh, she’s so mean,’ I wanted to say, ‘Maybe I’ve just had a bad day! Or maybe I’ve just been crying.’ You never know what people are going through. […] They see such a small piece of our lives, like paparazzi photos of us leaving the house. You know how awkward that is? To walk out of your own home and have 40 people waiting outside. And then you need to smile at random strangers.”
And sister Gigi vouched for her, noting that she’d read the feedback about her sister and has always found it ironic, because she knows Bella as, “kind, friendly, and very gentle.”
Let this serve as a reminder to think more and judge less — especially when it comes to our assumptions about others. Because the world can always use a little more kindness!
