What you learn from being in a new relationship

Some relationships can bring you a world of bliss, while others can feel like an emotional roller-coaster you can’t seem to get off. You can be with one partner that makes you feel as if you are on top of the world, while another can pull on your insecurity strings. And in between, you might have had a summer fling or a vacation romance that you’ll never forget. That’s the beauty of relationships: each one is different. Each one makes you learn new things about yourself. Each relationship is almost like a new relationship with yourself. You learn more about who you are, what you want, different sides of yourself and most importantly, your ability to love.

Every relationship you go through will teach you a lesson. It doesn’t mean the lesson will be easy or without sorrow. There will be times of joy and elation, and there will also be moments when you question yourself, and maybe when you question love itself. But it’s all worth it in the end because life is about experiences. Relationships mold you and shape you into who you are. You learn from being in a new relationship — and probably more than you even realized.

Love Can Be Different

Just like a pair of jeans, no relationship is the same. Love comes in all shapes and sizes. It’s not a one size fits all kind of thing. You might think you knew what love truly was until you enter into a new relationship, and BAM, you’re hit with a new kind of feeling. You might realize there’s a more passionate kind of love out there, or a more selfless love than you could have ever imagined. There are many different types of love to experience in life, and you only realize this when you’ve found it in a new relationship.

You Are Not X, Y And Z

Sometimes when you’re in a relationship, you start equating how you feel in that pairing to who are you. Meaning, if you’re feeling insecure with your partner, you might associate that feeling to being an insecure person. When in fact, you’re not insecure or needy, you just feel that way with your partner. So, when you find yourself in a new relationship, you realize those statements you once said about yourself, “I’m needy” or “I am emotional,” are just a bunch of B.S.. Different relationships bring out different sides in you.

You Are Capable Of Things You Never Expected

Maybe you considered yourself an anti-cuddler and now you’ve got a new mate and all you want to do is lay in bed and cuddle. When you’re in love, you do things you might have never imagined before. Your new partner may break down walls that you never knew existed. You might realize you are capable of a deeper love or you’re capable of communicating in a healthy way. New love shows you a new you.

You Really Do Want Things You Previously Didn’t Think You Wanted

You once swore off having children and/or thought getting married wasn’t for you — but with the right person, you might change your opinion. Being in a happy and healthy relationship can make you a believer. I’m not saying you are going to throw out your values and strong beliefs, but life goals can look a little different when you’re walking down a new path.

Love Isn’t All That Matters

After you’ve been in multiple relationships, you sure learn one hard truth — love isn’t everything. Even though you may love your partner to his or her core, that isn’t the only thing that will hold you two together. When you’re dating a new person, you have a better understanding of what qualities are important to you. Whether it’s loyalty, trust, respect or humor. You now have more of an awareness of your wants and needs in a relationship, beyond love.

A New Light On Previous Relationships

It’s hard to really see something for what it’s worth when you’re in it. When you enter into a new relationship, you can’t help but make comparisons. It’s like eating an Oreo and thinking it’s good, but then you eat a Snickers for the first time. Game changer. Sometimes you will see that being with a different lover gives you a new light on an old flame. You might realize that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, or you might like the view from where you’re standing.
