This behind-the-scenes “Star Wars: Force Awakens” video is completely out of this world

As if we didn’t spend enough time obsessing over Star Wars: The Force Awakens already, ILM Visual Effects Studios released a video breaking down the effects in the film. You might have to watch it like a half a dozen times to really understand what you’re seeing — we definitely did — but it’s totally worth it. It is INSANE how many visual aspects of this film were computer generated — and we didn’t even know!

Um, can we talk about how some of the characters aren’t even really there?!

Although Maz Kanata was voiced by Lupita Nyong’o, and we’re sure Maz’s movements were matched to Nyong’o’s to some extent as well, it’s WILD to see the actual physical character be deconstructed and then rebuilt in the video.

Same with that jerky alien who sold Rey bread in the beginning — how is this even possible?!

We figured the spaceships had to be artificially rendered, but it’s still mind blowing to see just how many layers are required to make them look lifelike. We can barely handle complicated coloring books — and yet there are people APPARENTLY who can build a FREAKING SPACESHIP on a computer. Pardon us while we cry in a corner over our own inadequacy.

Maybe the most mind-boggling thing to us was watching that whole First Order scene being built.

It looks like EVERYTHING, from the tiny troops, to the buildings, to the landscape, to the steam rising into the air was rendered on a computer. And it looks… real?! We seriously can’t handle this. The galaxy far, far away is far far outside of our comprehension.

It’s crazy to think how far we’ve come since the first Star Wars movie was released in 1977. And we can’t wait to see what the upcoming installments in this epic saga will bring.
