This gorgeous wedding dress costs just $70
Abbey Ramirez-Bodley was searching for her perfect wedding dress, but she couldn’t seem to find one that fit in her budget. So what did she do? She took matters into her own hands by creating her own beautiful dream dress. You know, like you do.
Abbey, 22, had seen a crocheted dress on another woman, and she fell in love — so she decided to make one herself. “I came across a girl that had kind of done the same thing and also had crocheted doilies, but I think it was short and didn’t have sleeves,” she told ABC News. “I showed the picture to my aunt and asked her if it was possible to do something like that. She taught me to crochet when I was four or five. We didn’t have a pattern. It was a lot of guesswork.”
But Abbey was determined to make her dream wedding dress. “I really fell in love with the idea,” she told Mashable. “I decided to change it a bit and make it into my own ideal wedding dress.”
Abbey and her aunt worked together, spending just $70 on cotton yarn to create the dress over the course of eight months. It was difficult, she told Mashable, because they only worked on it together. . . and the two of them live over two hours away from each other. “We could only work together on weekends,” she explained.

The hardest part was definitely creating the sleeves, she explained. “The sleeves were a nine-hour day,” Abbey told ABC News. “The bad thing about that was I had already crocheted all the doilies. But figuring out how to lay them around the armpit and getting the right length was hard. It was really hard. It was the longest stretch we sat down together and worked on it.”
But all of the hard work was totally worth it. People were totally wowed by Abbey’s gorgeous wedding dress. “Everybody loved it,” she told ABC News. “A few people kept my aunt tied up all night asking questions about it.”
And she blew her husband away as well. “When I told him I was going to do this he said he didn’t think it would work,” Abbey explained to ABC News. “He was amazed by the final piece of it. But anybody that knows me knows that I would choose this over a bought dress.”

Abbey’s dress was not only beautiful, but meaningful, something she created with her aunt that she’ll remember forever. “Making something with your own hands out of love is very special on the most important day of your life,” she told Mashable.
She wore a green dress underneath that matched the theme color of the wedding, and it was absolutely stunning. In fact, it makes us all want to just create our own wedding dresses in the future. Saving a ton of money while making something with our hands that we’ll cherish for the rest of our lives? Yeah, that basically sounds like the best thing ever.

And Abbey has some excellent advice for those who want to follow in her footsteps. “Do what you think is best and don’t let anyone deter you,” she told Mashable. “Start early and don’t get frustrated. The outcome is worth all the work.”
